The Belt and Road—My China Dream

Nurakhova Kamilya (Kazakhstan)

My name is Kamilya, and my Chinese name is Mixue. I come from the Republic of Kazakhstan, a central Asian inland country. The city I lived was Taraz, a southern city in Kazakhstan, named Zhambylbefore. There are three members in my happy family—nice and diligent mother, pretty and generoussister and outgoing me.

After nine years’basic education, I started to study English in a school of humanity in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. As I studied language, I had thechance to learn several other languages, like French, German and Chinese. Chinese was popular in the school. But before I learnt Chinese, I doubted that I could acquire it well. My sister loved Chinese girl accessoriesand food, so she encouraged me to study Chinese.

Finally, I asked my mother to contact my older sister and brother-in-law who worked in China. After I told them my study plan on the phone, they said to me, “Kamilya, come to China. You will love it once you comehere for study and living. Here, peopleare warm and life is convenient. We live here happy!”

In the fall of 2016, helped by my older sister and brother-in-law, Icame to China, with anticipation, excitement and anxiety. I studied in Lianyungang, a beautiful and affluent coastal city where they worked.

At the moment I got down from theplane, my heart was still like in the midair, and I felt I was walking on the clouds, because everything was so novel and strange. My sister and brother-in-law warmly welcomeme and took me to the beach for thefirst day. That was thefirst time I saw the choppy and vast sea, and it shocked me. Enjoying warm sunshine, blue sky and sea and the breeze blowing over my face, I realized that I loved this city.

My sister showed me around Lianyungang, and I was aware that she and her husbandhad become “China Expert”duringworking here. They seldom paid in cash in supermarkets or restaurants. Ifelt weird. Looking at my puzzled eyes, my sister smiled knowingly and told memysteriously, “In China, you can buy things withoutmoney even at the street stall.”Surprise in mind, I asked, “buying things withoutmoney? How is the seller so silly?”My brother-in-law laughed, “We pay with a cell phone. In China, mobile payment is very convenient.”I was completely confused. That was thefirst time thatI heard the term “mobile payment”. My brother-in-law told me with great pride that, “the Chinese governmenthas cooperated with over 60 countries, and extended the Belt and Road initiativeto Europe. The Belt and Road initiativebrought about a lot of opportunities. With the help of China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan have begun to constructrailways and expressways. I believe our country will experiencebig changes with the Belt and Road initiative. Nowadays, China’s science and technology is advanced, especiallyin network. In some ways, the networkscience and technology in China has caught up with and even surpassthe United States. Since you have been in China, you must seize the opportunity to learn advanced knowledgeand technology.”

I applied for learning Chinese in Lianyuangang Technical College soon. The college is close to Huaguo Mountain, the birthplaceof a famous figurein theancientmythology—Journey to the West. Lianyungang Technical College has a very beautiful campus where I enjoy the clean boulevard, warm classmates and amiable teachers. For me, everything is so wonderful! In the first class, Ms. Yan, my Chinese teacher, took a Chinese name for each of us. From that day, I have a Chinese name—Mixue. Ms. Yan explained that“Mi”was taken from thepronunciationin my Russian Name, and “Xue”means “snow”. She wantedme to be a girl as pure as snow. I really like this name, and I am gratefulthatshe gave me such a good Chinese name. Ialso thank her for making me understandthat every Chinese name contains moral and blessings.

In the college, Imet many classmates who are also very interested in China. Yali comes from Canada, Shuna from Uzbekistan, Xiaozhe from Kyrgyzstan, Luqing from Equatorial Guinea, Leiyu from Afghan and Maidou from Pakistan…Soon I got along well with my teachers and classmates and we became good friends. Theteachers are concerned about us, no matter in studying or living. In order to let us not feel lonely, they often invite us to theirparties so thatwe can better appreciateChinese cuisineand culture.

In the college canteen, a variety of Chinese food makes our mouth water. My friend Lingyun, anotherKazakhstan girl, and I like cauliflowerand tofu best. Ialso like cooking. Carrot, black fungus and cauliflowercan be deliciousand nutritious dish with olive oil. Every week, my sister and I go to supermarkets to buy ingredients, and we cook dishes for my brother-in-law and his friends. The fried carrot and cauliflowerhas becomea must-be dish to entertainfriends. As a Chinese saying goes, “Food is the first necessityof man.”Chinese makes varioustofu dishes, such as tofu with preserved egg, braised tofu, Mapo spicy tofu, uncongealedtofu, toufu soup…so many names make me feel dizzy. However, no matterwhat a dish it is, the white, soft and tender tofu is great.

When I just arrived in China, I made a fool of myselfdue to incomprehension of profoundChinese culture. Ihave a Chinese friend, Hope, and she often invites me to her home. She has two daughters, 12-year-old Amy and 7-year-old Winnie. They are cute and polite. Once, Amy was eating instant noodle with her sister. I asked them how to say “instant noodles”in Chinese and Amy told me thatthey were “fangbianmian”. Later, when I chatted with Hope, we talked about instant noodles, but I couldn’t recall their Chinese name. I just call them “fangbian”. Hope thought I needed “go washroom”, and after we explained for a long time, we understoodeach other’s meaning. We laughed into tears. In Chinese, “fangbian”has several meanings. In “fangbianmian”(instant noodles), it means convenience and fast, while in some otheroccasions, it means “go washroom”. Hey, how a joke!

As a foreignstudentin China, I feel fortunate. Iam gratefulto President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government’s Belt and Road initiative. It benefits every country and its peoplealong the belt and road line. Ihope that this time-honored and new “Silk Road”inherits and carries forward Chinese cultureand glory. It is a road of hope. Iwill plant the seed of friendshipin Lianyungang, my second hometown, and work togetherwith Chinese people to create a brighter future.
