The Story between Xuzhou and Me

KIM BYUNGJOON(South Korea)

On the ancientYellow River, a thin layer of ice covers; on the sides of the river, citizens run for exercisein the evening, and old men look for chess opponents. As a foreigner who loves Chinese cultureand has been living in Xuzhou for eight years, I often play chess here.

Because of a comic version of Roman of Three Kingdoms, I am connected with thecity of Xuzhou. When I was in my childhood, I saw thebook in my grandfather’s room and was obsessed with it. I referred to numeroushistorical materials related to Romance of Three Kingdoms.

At that time, Isaid to my grandfather, “If only I could read the Chinese version!”

My grandfatherreplied, “Maybe you can go to learn Chinese.”

Recalling to that, I never thought an inadvertentdialogue would completely change my life trajectory.

With my knowledgeof China and Chinese culturedeepening, I increasingly love the country and its civilization. During my period of growth, China’s internationalinfluence was also on the rise, and its economicpower was even stronger.

An ancientcivilized country of 1.4 billion peopleburst into such vitality and strengthin such a short period of time, which deeply shocked me.

Unconsciously, the seed in my heart comes out and finally blooms “Dream of China”.

Iwas well aware that I was going to China and I hoped that I could keep up with the pace of developmentin this great country and realize my dream!

After graduation, I immediately packed to come to China. I went to many cities, almost seeing all China’s scenery. All along, Chang’an, thecapital of the Tang Dynasty, was the most desirable place for me. Even now I call Xi’an as Chang’an, the ancientname of thecity in Korean. However, when I arrived in China, I got to know that, the Han Dynasty, ancientChina’s first powerfuldynasty, started from an unknown city, Xuzhou. I came to Xuzhou for some reasons. First, it has convenient traffic. Xuzhou has been a trafficartery since ancienttimes. It is a place of strategic importance, which is enoughto prove its superiorgeographicalposition. At present, the railways and airportare in good condition. The visitforged a long-lasting relationship. The history, culture, scenery, cuisineand local conditions and customs in Xuzhou deeply attracted me. Istayed here to study, have a love affair, work and live for one year, and I finally decided to settle here.

I love Xuzhou, and I also hope more peopleto understandit. In 2010, Istarted a website to introduceXuzhou to Koreans. The website’s name is “Xuzhou Story”, and it mainly introduces Xuzhou’s economy, culture (Han culture), educationand other aspects of life. Iupdatedetail informationevery day, sometimes specific to a restaurant’s name. Many Koreans who love China like me view the informationon the website. A considerable proportionof them was attracted by the promotion information, and came to Xuzhou, especiallyKorean students. There were also Koreans investors asking me about the situationin Xuzhou, and I spared no efforts to help them and have alreadycontributed to some projects.

As a foreigner in Xuzhou, my life is filled with novelty, surpriseand differences, and I am always moved. Different culturebrings about the same smile. The first time when I saw a Chinese white gourd in the supermarket, I thought it was a cucumber, “China deserves thereputationof having vast land and abundant resources, and even cucumbers grow so big!”Astonished, I took a photo with that white gourd and posted it online, thus being ridiculed since then. Huawei cell phone is popular in China, but I never imagined that I need “rush to buy”. Before buying Huawei cell phone, I set the alarm clock and made everything ready. But when the verificationcode came out, I was dumbfounded, because I did notunderstandthe font. It made me feel illiterate, and I failed to buy a cell phone in the end. I finally bought an outdated style of “Huawei”cell phone. In Xuzhou, I ate a cicada for the first time, and it was lifelongmemorable; I ate the “giant salamander”for the first time, a kind of Xuzhou snack, but to find no fish in the bowel; I ate the “tianji”(“ji”means chicken) porridgein Pengcheng #1 mall for the first time, but to know that “tianji”was not a kind of chicken, frog instead. I got aware that the name of a dish sometimes did not refer to the ingredients. For example, “ants in the tree”is withoutants; “fried squirrels and mandarinfish”is withoutsquirrels; “Dongpo meat”is not the meat of the famous poet Su Dongpo of the Song Dynasty. All these experiences make me know more about and love more this city.

My Chinese improves in practice. When I first came to China, I kept the Ouba hairstylein the Korean dramas. When I cut my hair in a Chinese barbershop, I said to the barber, “please cut it a littleshort.”The result turned out to be a nightmare, because my hair was cut extremelyshort, just like the hair of soldiers in service. This painfullesson let me know that, in Chinese, the pause and accent are so important. Different pauses and accentsin the same sentencehave different meanings. Xuzhou peopleare hospitable. Even after a single drink, they may treat you as a brother. In Xuzhou, I feel a lot of warmth. At the beginning, I could not tell the “courtesy word”, making some jokes. Once a Xuzhou person I got acquainted with said to me, “come to have a drink some day.”(Literally, come to have a drink two days later) I immediately asked, “what the exact time two days later?”In Chinese, “two days later”usually means some days later, and the invitationis just courtesy word. But this time we really went drinking two days later.

Now I am a “Xuzhou expert”. Here, I have a job, a home, a longtime girlfriendand the China Dream. I hope I can watch my China Dream come out with beautifulflowers and sweet fruits.
